Can You Stay Close to a Friend Who Lives Far Away?

Distance – How far one place is from another place.

Example – The distance between my best friend and me is very long.

Keep in touch – To talk or write to someone often.

Example – We keep in touch with short messages every day.

Effort – The hard work you do to get something.

Example – A far friendship needs effort from both people.

Routine – Something you do again and again at the same time.

Example – Our Sunday video call is a happy routine.

Miss – To feel sad because someone is not with you.

Example – I miss my friend, but we talk every week.

Many people have a friend who lives far away. Maybe your friend moved to a new city. Maybe she went to study in another country. You laugh together on the phone, but you cannot have coffee together. Can this kind of friendship stay strong?

The short answer is yes. But it is not always easy. Distance changes how friends spend time together. When you live near a friend, you see each other without a plan. You meet at school, at work, or at the shop. When your friend lives far away, these small moments disappear. You must make new moments on purpose.

Researchers have looked at this question. According to a study in the journal Communication Quarterly, friends who live near each other and friends who live far apart keep their friendships in different ways. Close friends often share time and places. Far friends need other ways to show they care. They may send messages, call, or plan visits. The study shows that distance does not end a friendship. It only changes the way people take care of it.

Another idea comes from Robin Dunbar, a professor at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He studies how many friends people can have. According to a report in The New Yorker, Dunbar says that friendships get weaker when people do not talk for a long time. Even a very good friend can slowly become a stranger. The good news is that a little contact helps a lot. A call or a message can keep the friendship alive.

Greater Good Magazine, from the University of California, Berkeley, also writes about this. According to Greater Good, lasting friendships need time and effort. Good friends do not just happen. They grow when people give attention again and again. This is true for friends who live close, and it is even more true for friends who live far away.

So what can you do? Here are some simple ideas.

First, make a routine. Choose a day and a time to talk, like Sunday at six o’clock. A routine is easy to remember. It also tells your friend, “You are important to me.” If you wait for a free day, the free day may never come.

Second, send small messages. You do not need to write a long letter. Send a photo of your lunch. Send a funny video. Say, “I thought of you today.” These small messages are like little visits. They make your friend feel close to you.

Third, share your normal life. Many people only call when something big happens. But close friends also like small news. Tell your friend about your bus ride, your new shoes, or your bad day. This helps your friend feel like part of your life.

Fourth, do something together online. You can watch the same movie at the same time. You can cook the same dish and show it on a video call. You can play a game. Doing something together is more fun than just talking.

Fifth, plan a visit if you can. A trip does not have to be big or expensive. Even one weekend together can make a friendship stronger. It also gives you something happy to look forward to.

Finally, be kind to yourself and to your friend. Sometimes one person is busy and forgets to call. That is normal. Do not think your friend does not care. Just send a message and say hello. Friends who live far away must be patient with each other.

It is true that you will miss your friend. You will wish you could sit together on the same sofa. But distance does not have to be the end. With a little effort and a good routine, a far friend can stay one of the closest people in your life. In some ways, you may even talk more than before, because you try harder.
