Grounding simply means making direct physical contact with the Earth. This can happen when you walk barefoot on grass, sand, or dirt, swim in natural water, or even sit on the ground. Although the idea sounds simple, some researchers believe grounding may have real effects on the body.
The Earth carries a natural electrical charge. The surface of the planet contains a large supply of negatively charged particles called electrons. When our bodies touch the Earth directly, these electrons may move into the body through our skin.
