Brain Rot: How Social Media Is Aging Young Brains

Foggy Mind – not able to think clearly

Endless – seeming to have no end or limit

Cognitive – relating to the process of thinking and understanding

Accelerate – to make something move or happen faster

In 2024, it was chosen as Oxford’s Word of the Year after becoming very popular on

social media. It’s used to describe that tired, foggy feeling you get after spending too

much time online, especially after scrolling through endless short videos that don’t

require much thought.

And that feeling isn’t just something you’re imagining. Scientists say it’s linked to real

changes in how the brain works.

A 2025 study found that using social media too much can lead to memory loss, shorter

attention spans and slower thinking. Another report looked at 71 different studies and

found that watching too many short videos is linked to weaker cognitive performance.

Gen Z — usually defined as people born between 1997 and 2012 — grew up with

smartphones. And people this age spend more time on social media than those in any

other age group.

Because their brains are still developing, experts believe these young people may be

more affected by brain rot. Some researchers say this could even lead to “accelerated

brain aging,” where the brain shows signs of aging earlier than expected.

The good news is that many young people are now taking steps to protect their brains

from brain rot.

Some are doing digital detoxes — taking breaks from social media and spending more

time offline. There are also apps that help by blocking social media or limiting screen

time, so it’s easier to take a break from your phone.

Phone-free spaces are also becoming more common. Some restaurants and clubs now

ask people to put away their phones so they can focus and connect in real life.

So if you’re worried about brain rot, putting your phone away would be a good start!
